What is life coaching?

  • Coaching is an emerging means of supporting a creative life lived to the full.

  • A coach can be a guide in a particular moment, or an ongoing presence through many seasons.

  • Richard's intent is to encourage, to present opportunities for growth, and help give clarity to  priorities, and to offer accountability for the projects and relationships most important to you.

  • There are as many different coaching styles as there are coaches, so take time to get acquainted with your prospective coach. Richard offers a free get-to-know-you session.

  • Richard does not coach basketball. He rather stinks at it.

Is this counseling?

  • Nope. Where counseling and therapy have great gifts in times of illness or trouble, coaching considers the client whole, resourceful and creative.

  • Coaching is perfect when you are curious and ready, but not in crisis.

  • You will get no advice from Richard. Instead, he listens carefully and leads you according to your own strengths and desire for growth.

Will I be pushed?

  • Only as much as you want to be. Coaching leads the client at his or her own pace, while providing a summoning path forward.

  • Everyone is different, so Richard will ask how much challenge you desire.

  • Richard invites you to accept opportunities for growth as he sees the possibilities. You can always say, "No thanks. I'm full."

Who sets the agenda?

  • Coaching is a collaboration. You set the agenda and the coach leads the way.

  • You may not want to be in the driver's seat, but you probably have an inkling where you want to start, right?

  • Richard starts new clients with an affirmation of your strengths.

Can I spill my guts?

  • Confidentiality is what makes coaching work. Sharing whatever you wish in a safe and creative atmosphere makes real discovery possible.

  • Everything shared goes in the Vault.

  • Sometimes you want someone to witness with you a spotlight moment that is happening. To use religious language, your life story is holy.

Is this spiritual direction?

  • Yes, many of Richard's clients call his Way a kind of post-modern spiritual direction.

  • Richard's training in theology, the arts and positive psychology allows for all manner of creative conversation.

What if I'm not religious?

  • You may not be attached to a faith tradition, but you have a rich invisible life. That is, you have a sense of personal priorities, a way of noticing beauty and uniqueness, and a meaning for life that centers you.

  • Richard honors all spiritual paths and is ready to support you in exploring the new life that is emerging within you.

  • If you are interested in cultivating spiritual practices to ground your life, Richard is adept. Few of them involve snakes or fire.

"As a coach, Richard helped me explore issues at my own pace. He helped clarify points by asking the right questions at the right moment.

I had felt stuck and he helped me untangle certain things. I now know better what I want to move on with. Thank you!"
